Balance Disorders
A balance system disorder is a condition that makes you feel unsteady or dizzy. Relative to your position, you might feel as if you are moving, spinning (‘vertigo’), or floating. If you are walking, you may suddenly feel as if you might fall over.
Balance system disorders can be caused by certain health conditions, medications, or a problem in the inner ear or the brain. A balance system disorder can cause individuals to severely limit or modify their daily activities and can also lead to psychological and emotional issues.
How can an Audiologist help?
Audiologists can help by:
- Conducting an audiologic assessment since some patients with dizziness and imbalance symptoms will have hearing symptoms as well
- Providing education on how having a balance system disorder can affect a person’s ability to complete their daily activities
- Giving a referral for or providing vestibular rehabilitation (VRT)
